OCM Elections Results, Beng Choo, Megat, Zakaria ousted

There was a shock in the Olympic Council of Malaysia Elections when long serving officials Dato Low Beng Choo, Dato Megat Zulkarnain and Dato Zakaria Ahmad were defeated .

Dato Nazifuddin Najib edged Beng Choo by a mere vote but in elections like this, it’s the first past the post that matters.

Nazifuddin maybe young but has a vision to make changes in sports.

Two women were also voted in as Vice Presidents with Dato Mumtaz Jaafar creating a tidal wave by collecting 84 votes out of a possible 97.

A total of 97 delegates out of 105 eligible castes their votes as seven delegates failed to attend and no replacements were allowed for failing to comply with the constitutional requirement of changing the names 24 hours before the AGM.

While the entire AGM, right from registration and speeches by candidates was generally well received, two incidents somewhat marred the AGM.

The first bring the speech by outgoing President Tunku Tan Sri Imran Tuanku Jaafar who for reasons best known to him, opted to use that platform to openly lobby for Dato Azim Zabidi and Dato Low Beng Choo.

Imran spoke volumes of their abilities and capabilities, just stopping short of telling the delegates to vote for the duo,

This was the talking point for delegates over lunch as many felt it was not ethical for Imran to canvas for any candidate,

The second died point was the decision not to allow the media to sit in during the AGM as they were told to go and watch the proceedings from a room a floor below.

Now this was perfectly logical if it applied to everyone, but it was clearly seen many individuals, who were campaigners for candidates being allowed to register as observers.

Even public listed companies allow the media to cover their AGM so really OCM should not shut out the media who they count on to provide publicity to sports.

After all if transparency and FairPlay is the name of the game then it should be open to media.
