AHF Elections, King is Royal Patron as Dato Manjit is Vice President

The Asian Hockey Confederation has a new President.

With His Majesty Al Sultan Abdullah Ibni Sultan Ahmad Shah , due to his official duties as King did not seek re-election, the position of President has been entrusted to long serving Dato Fumio Ogura from Japan.

Malaysia assumed the presidency of the AHF in 1994 with Sultan Azlan Shah at the helm and was replaced by Al Sultan Abdullah.

However His Majesty has graciously consented to be the Royal Patron of the AHF thus keeping close ties with Asian Hockey despite his busy duties as the King.

All was however still good news for Malaysia as MHC Vice President Dato Manjit Majid Abdullah has assumed the position of Vice President at the AHF.

Dato Manjit, who is currently the Deputy President of the Johor Hockey Association first ventured into the sport when he was elected as the Secretary of JHA in 1984.

Dato Manjit successfully organised the 2009 Junior World Cup with Singapore as co – hosts and was instrumental in the planning and organisation of the annual Sultan of Johor Cup which was inaugurated in 2011.

As a result of his dedication , Dato Manjit was presented with a special award for youth development in Asia by successfully hosting the Sultan of Johor Cup for the past eight years at the AHF Gala Dunner last night.

“ This is indeed a honour for not only me but for hockey in Malaysia said Dato Manjit.

“ The AHF will of course miss the astute leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah.

“ However I will strive to contribute towards the development and promotion of the sport in this region.”

The AHF elections were held in a cordial manner and showcased Asian solidarity as no position was contested.

The election of Dato Fumio Ogura is a step in the right direction as he has Hockey close to his heart.

A regular at events held in Malaysia, Dato Fumio shares a good relationship with members of the hockey fraternity all over the world with his unassuming character and laid back approach.

Together with Dato Tayab Ikram, a hardworking and professional administrator, the duo will undoubtedly play a key role in helping to uplift the standard of Asian Hockey.

“ It is no easy task to fill the shoes of His Majesty King Abdullah,” admitted Dato Fumio.

“ We are grateful and thankful for his leadership of AHF and thank him for his contributions.

“ And we are truly honoured that His Majesty has accepted the rule of Royal Patron of the AHF.

“ In behalf of the Asian Hockey Family, I wish to place on record our sincere gratitude and appreciation to His Majesty.”
