Easy win for KL

City girls hit six goals past Perak

Kuala Lumpur scored an emphatic 6-2 win over Perak in the TNB-Tun Abdul Razak Cup Women’s Hockey Tournament at the Kuala Lumpur Hockey Stadium today.

Nurrobiatu Norhisham, Nor Syafiqah Mohd Zain and Nur Zafirah Aziz scored two goals each.

It was Kuala Lumpur, who finished fourth last year, went ahead through Nurrobiatu in the eighth minute. The early break came from an open goal opportunity after Perak defenders had failed to check Nurrobiatu who placed the ball past goalkeeper Mas Huzaimah Abd Aziz.

Nur Syafiqah increased the lead in the 21st minute from a powerful penalty corner strike that caught Mas Huzaimah bemused.

Perak, however, were back on track when Norbaini Hashim restored parity in the side via a penalty corner conversion in the 26th minute as Kuala Lumpur cantered off the field with a 2-1 half-time lead.

KL continued where they left off by scoring the third goal in the 35th minute through Nur Zafirah’s field goal strike but the celebration did not last long as Sofia Eizzatul Eillyana closed the gap 3-2 for Perak in the 43rd minute via open play.

But it was the Kuala Lumpur players who prodded on after Sofia’s comeback and were rewarded with more goals from Nur Syafiqah (44th), Nurrobiatu (51st minute) and Nur Zafirah (58th) to pull a 6-2 victory.

“It was a good win for Kuala Lumpur in our first match in a tough encounter. I like the positive attitude shown by the players in search for goals. They did not give up when Perak scored and kept the momentum going,” said KL coach Badrul Hisham.

The city girls will take on defending champions Pahang in the second match tomorrow. Pahang had in an earlier match defeated Terengganu 4-0.
