Govers aims to ace it in MHL

Kieren Govers is enjoying his stint in the Malaysian Hockey League.

The former Australian International is representing University Kuala Lumpur in the MHL and created waves by scoring five goals in his first match against Selangor in the Alagendra Cup held last week.

“ I thinks it is great for foreign players like us to come experience this challeng,” said Govers.

“ And for the Malaysian players they gain the experience of playing with us.

“ It’s similar to Indian League, but obviously a lot less money and travelling!l, “ he quipped.

UniKL open their league campaign with a match against Tenaga Nasional Berhad this Friday at the National Hockey Stadium Bukit Jalil.

“ As in any league , the opening match is going to be hard. We as a team have to combine better then what we have displayed in the knockout ,” Govers contended.

“ Obviously in the long run we want to play in the big game at the end of the season but Arul ( our coach ) has kept our heads on the ground and made sure we take it game by

Govers loves to hit the Golf fairways and currently is a 7 handicapper.

“ I love my golf and lately back in Australia I play 1-2 times a week depending on work and family commitments ,” he added.

“ I played a round with the other foreign players at Kirnana Golf Club on Tuesday and it was a bunch of fun.”

When asked why he fired blanks after his five goal feat in the opening match, Govers had this to say,

“ I was lucky enough to score five goals in the first match. Great team play allowed me to convert. I scored in the second match as well but the goal was credited to another team member.

“To be honest it does not bother me if I don’t score, as long as we win and play well I’m happy, scoring a goal is a bonus.

“Yes it’s going to be my job to try and score and help score goals so hopefully us forwards we get a lot of ball during the league to allow us to have many opportunities to score!”
