Hockey: Azlan Shah Cup Called Off

The Sultan Azlan Shah Cup Hockey Tournament will not be held this year.

Initially skated from 11-18 April, the tournament was then moved to September due to the Covid 19 situation.

Six teams had confirmed their participation for the 29th edition of the Azlan Shah Cup that was first held in 1983.

The six are Australia, Pakistan, Canada, Japan, South Korea and Malaysia.

“ We sought advice from HRH Sultan Nazrin abd were told to call off the tournament this year,” revealed Perak Hockey Association President Mohd Sayuti Samat.

“ We have informed the MHC and they will in turn send the notification of postponement to the FIH, AHF and the teams concerned.

“ We need to look at the international calendar for next year before proposing a suitable date for the 2021 edition.

“ While it is sad that we are unable to host the tournament this year, the well being of the teams, officials and fans is of utmost importance.”

With the Malaysian Games ( Sukma ) scheduled for March next year and the start of Ramadhan in mid April, there is only a small window to host the tournament in its transitional month of March/April.

As the Tokyo Olympics are in July, the only other option is to hold it either in February or middle of May.

And given the fact that there are many international events moved to next year, a study needs to be conducted on the most suitable dates.

As for another annual Hockey event, the Sultan of Johor Cup, currently is still scheduled for October 3-10 but a more conclusive decision will be made in June.

So far Great Britain, Australia, India and Malaysia have confirmed participation with rookies awaited from Japan and Germany.
