Hockey: The scramble for coaches in MHL

Just how many teams are there in the upcoming Malaysian Hockey League?

The answer will only be known for certain this Saturday when the managers meeting is held.

Earlier there were indications that there was to be 8 men’s and 6 women’s teams.

Somehow that got turned into 6 men’s and 8 women’s team after the MHC Executive Board meeting.

Now while the attention is on just how many will play, there is the usual musical chairs for coaches going around.

Terengganu Hockey Team parted ways with the coach and were looking at biting a Korean.

However with local coaches being given their letters on non renewing of contracts till March next year, that has somewhat changed the equation.

K. Dharmaraj, who is renowned for his success in the MHL is said to be in talks with Terengganu.

His familiarity with the players will surely work in his advantage and he will be a good choice.

Another national casualty Minho Nasihin Nubli Ibrahim is said you have penned a deal with Terengganu Ladies Hockey Team.

Tensga Nasional Berhad and TNB Thunderbolts are expected to be spearheaded by Nor Saiful Zaini and Mohd Amin Rahim respectively, another two of the coaches that were not retained temporarily .

Maybank will continue to put their faith in Azrul Effendy Bustsman whole UniKL are said to have retained Arul Athoni Selvaraj who is expected to arrive after Christmas.

There are also rumours that the PDRM Ladies team are in talks with former national coach Paul Lissek as a consultant.

However that deal is yet to be inked.

The other three teams in the men’s league are expected to be Uitm, Nur Insafi and debutants Kuala Lumpur who are putting their faith into S. Selvarajoo who despite being an employee of UniKL is not expected to find a spot in Arul’s team.

And in a related development, K. Ananthavale has been appointed as the Tournament Director, overstepping many more experienced officials.

So let’s see what’s in store for MHL 2020 as one thing is certain, there will not be a knock out competition.

And the newly appointed Competitions Committee sees the inclusion of those who have had little or no knowledge on the mechanics of fielding a team in the MHL.

Oh well, who cares anyway right, let’s all reward each other as Xmas comes early for some.
