KLHC hoping to do a double on THT

Press Release

Despite winning the first trophy at stake in the Malaysian Hockey League, defending league champions KL Hockey Club have their feet firmly on the ground.

And they are well aware of the challenges and pitfalls that await them in the opening match against Terengganu Hockey Team in the Charity Shield match which is the curtain raiser for the league this Friday.

It will not be easy for KLHC as THT remained unbeaten when playing in Terengganu last season.

Still KLHC coach Lim Chiow Chuan is hoping the shoot out win over THT in the Alagendra Cup final last Sunday will spur his players to another majestic display in the lions den this Friday.

“ The fighting spirit, resilience and composure to stick to game plan was instrumental in our comeback win over THT in the final,” said Chiow Chuan.

“ To me that win and performance is motivation enough to know that good teams have this characteristic.

“ We are not there yet but certainly progressing in the right direction.”

KLHC were down 0-2 in the first quarter before ending the match at 3-3 in regulation time and prevailed in the shoot out.

“ The players are interacting well on and off the pitch. After three matches they are beginning to understand each other better” added Lim.

KLHC have six foreign players and ably assisted by a host of current and former Malaysian internationals.

Their bench strength is the envy of many as they are able to make changes without affecting the strength of the team.

“ We need to minimise defensive errors and not give soft penalty corners away,” said Lim wary of the fact of the opponents ability from set pieces.

Lim was also aware that it will be tough to remain consistent as teams will be playing a league match every three days.

“ Having to play 16-17 matches in 5 weeks is tough for the players” added the former national assistant coach,

“A longer league will ensure sufficient recovery for the players leading to better quality performance.

“The effect will be seen in the 4th & final week.”
