OCM to reconvene Independent Selection Panel

After the rather loose selection of the athletes for the 2019 Manila SEA Games, the Olympic Council of Malaysia has decided to reconvene the Special Panel to decide the selection criteria for multi sports events.

After the dismal outing at the 2018 Jakarta/Palembang Asian Games in 2018, OCM has in September that year formed an independent panel to look into the selection criteria for athletes

The panel headed by Tan Sri Dato Dr. M. Jegathesan had completed their task within six week, often meeting once a week to come out with recommendations that were eventually approved by the OCM Executive Board and Council in January/February 2019.

However somewhere along the line, changes were made, supposedly to tweak the criteria, but that created more loopholes for some to push through their under qualified athletes.

This the work of the panel, which was represented by some illustrious names of Malaysian Sports, in the likes for former NSC Director General Dato Wira Mazlan Ahmad, Dato Sieh Kok Chi, Dato Dr. Ramlan Abdul Aziz, Tan Sri Prof Ibrahim Saad, Maninderjit Singh and Nurul Huda Abdullah, ended up to be an exercise in futility.

However OCM President Dato Seri Norza Zakaria said it was decided at the OCM Board meeting Tuesday which he chaired, that the Panel will be asked to reconvene.

“ We need them to revisit the criteria and look at a more stringent mechanism in the selection of athletes for multi sports events,” revealed Norza

“ We have several multi sports events coming ip in 2021 and 2022 , hence clear and precise criteria ought uk be defined.

“ This is important so that we can send quality Athletes that meet the criteria instead of us depending on the arguments put up by the respective national associations.”

In the Manila SEA Games, the contingent failed to meet the desired gold medal targets and despite a post mortem held, the findings have yet to be made public.

One of the biggest hornet s is the NSC and NSI dominance at the Selection Committee meetings where with trucks of officers joining in . NSC often get their way.

The lack of a Research and Development unit and the ever missing online publishing of the criteria gives room for unscrupulous persons to push their agenda, often promising the moon and the stars.

That coupled with the fact that the NSA’s are often coerced to agree with medal targets of NSC results in lower achievement , thus a furore after each multi sports event

OCM needs to form a truly independent Selection Panel and not allow Ex-officio individuals from dominating proceedings.

Until that is done, things will not change for OCM no longer is the chair to decisions, not when their own staff report to NSC when it should be the other way around, Especially in multi sports events that is.
