Play as a team UniKL

Inability to convert chances, too much individual play and poor execution of penalty corners are some of the areas UniKL will need to work on before their match against Maybank on Sunday.

The university side played well below expectations in their 2-3 defeat at the hands of Tenaga Nasional Berhad in the opening league match of the MHL on Friday.

Abd coach A. Arul Selvaraj is well aware that if left unchecked, this could end up to be a fruitless weekend.

Players like Jeroen Hertzberger, Sander de Wijn, Glen Turner, Kieren Govers and Marhan Jalil can provide the spark needed to carry UniKL through.

But they tend to overdo things and not play as a unit thus leading to the defeat against TNB.

“ We were too complacent and paid the price for it,” said Arul.

“ There was just too much running with the ball and we also were too slow in the semi circle, this giving opponents the chance to recover.

“ And our defenders were ball watching instead of trying to get to the ball before our opponents did.

“ Overall it was a poor performance that cost us the match and we need to take stock of the situation.”

Arul said that they were looking at their penalty corner department as they were poor in executing the seven penalty corners they were awarded in the match.

Maybank too lost their opening match, a 1-2 defeat at the hands of TNB Thunderbolts with the winner coming seconds before the final whistle.

“Maybank are a good side and we cannot take things fir granted lest we will pay the price,” said Arul.

“ We need to have points on the board and it must start from the match against Maybank.

“ We need to pull up our socks and there are no two ways about it but play Hockey that we are capable of.”
