UniKL are champions

University Kuala Lumpur emerged champions of the TNB Cup by defeating KL Hockey Club 4-3 in sudden death shootout.

Both the teams were tied 1-1 at the end of regulation play and the title had to be decided by shootout.

“ This is a historical win and really we should have wrapped it up in regulation time,” says ab skated UniKL coach A. Arul Selvaraj.

“ All credit to the players and to KLGC as the final was of high level.

“ This win now allows me to move on in life and maybe look for other options as I have delivered as desired.

“ I was always confident we could do it even though it went into a shootout.

“ As I said, it’s not how we start but how we finish.”

For KLHC coach Lim Chiow Chuan. The defeat was bitter but he was pleased with the overall performance of his team.

“ A closely contested match and we played well but the penalty corners let us down,” said KLHC coach Lim Chiow Chuan.

“ We were not sharp in our penalty corners and they read our set pieces well.

“ Ovwrall I am happy with our season and the two titles made up, shoot out means a lottery, and we lost.”

Both the teams used the opening few

minutes to settle down and hardly threatened each other’s goal, with keepers Roslan Jamaluddin and David Harte not touching the ball.

UniKL were awarded their first penalty corner in the 20th minute but Hertzberger failed to get his attempt right.

The second penalty corner was miffed as the push out by skipper Marhan Jalil was wayward.

And Hertzberger sent the third penalty corner straight into Roslan Jamaluddin.

KLHC had two penalty corners of their own but Jang Jong Hyun failed to get a shot on target as UniKL run out neutralised the attempts.

It was UniKL that took the lead in the 33rd minute through Glenn Turner who picked up a ball out of defence by Sander De Wjin to send a reverse hit past Roslan.

Hardly had the cheers died down that KLHC were level,

A penalty corner was changed into a penalty stroke after Izwan Firdaus was deemed to have fouled Harvinder Singh.

Jang had no problem sending the ball past Harte to make it 1-1 in the 36th minute.

Both teams had late penalty corners but did not make them count Abd the title had to be decided by shootout.
