UniKL slam six past Maybank

University Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) sigh a huge relief after bouncing back from defeat to register their first win in the 2018 TNBMHL Premier League.

Coach A. Arul Selvaraj’s boys defeated Maybank 6-0 at the National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil today. Both teams went into the match in search of their first win in the tournament.

UniKL suffered a 2-3 defeat in the hands of Tenaga Nasional Berhad last Friday whilst Maybank also went down 1-2 against TNB Thunderbolts’ with the winner coming seconds before the final whistle.

“I am happy with the way we played in the second half with the team building the momentum with easy tapping-in goals. The first half was rather a slow start but we overcame this with better team work in later stages,” said UniKL coach Arul.

The match got off on a slow pace but UniKL eventually made inroads with quick counterattacks.

Netherlands’ Jeroen Dolf Hertzberger was involved in a one-to-one situation in the 14th minute with only Australian goalkeeper Hayward Leon Kayne in his way but the Dutchman slammed the ball wide. That was the only golden opportunity UniKL had of taking the lead.

However, two minutes into the second quarter UniKL’s attacking machinery of Sanders De Wijn, Tomothy James Deavin, Kieran Ian Govers and Malaysian Faridzul Afiq Mohd made darting moves inside Maybank territory that resulted in a goal much to the joy of their motley fans.

It came in the 19th minute from a well orchestrated move between Deavin and Faridzul. The former picked a crossed inside the semi-circle and relayed the ball to Faridzul who calmly connected it into goal.

UniKL continued the pressure and doubled the score seconds before the first half hooter from a penalty corner. Hertzberger sounded the board with a low flick that sailed past keeper Kayne.

Izwan Firdaus Ahmad Tajuddin made it 3-0 from close range in the 51th minute, Joel Samuel Van Huizen added the fourth (54th), Glenn Stewarts Turner scored the fifth (57th minute) whilst Hertzberger completed the rout from an open play goal towards the end of the match to give UniKL this well deserved victory.

UniKL now goes into showdown with Kuala Lumpur Hockey Club on Wednesday at the KL Hockey Stadium (5pm) while Maybank plays Terengganu Hockey Team at the National Hockey Stadium (6pm).
