UniKL on a signing spree

UniKL are hell bent on not only retaining the MHL Overall Trophy but are also eyeing additional honours in the Malaysian Hockey League season that gets underway with the knockout tournament on January 3.

The university side are said to be on the verge of signing on the dotted lines a deal that will see national players Mohd Razie Rahim and Shukri Mutalib donning their colours.

The duo played for KL Hockey Club and the City side had decided to stop playing in the MHL at the end of last season.

Another former KLHC player, Harvinder Singh will also play for UniKL after initially being linked to Nur Insafi.

With Najmi Farizal staying put at UniKL , they will have a potent penalty corner battery as both Razie and Najmi are much feared in this department.

But while signing on these players will instil fear in their opponents, it’s the foreign signings that are expected to raise eyebrows

It is learnt that UniKL has retained last Seasons signings – keeper David Harte of Ireland as well as Aussie striker Keiren Govers.

And it is learnt that former Aussie skipper Mark Knowles who retired from international duty after the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games is also on the UniKL radar.

And the list gets more impressive as two Dutch international, who played in the recent World Cup – Valentin Verga and Robert Kemperman are expected to join the club subject to them getting a non objection certificate from Dutch Hockey.

This is because the duo are needed for the inaugural Pro League that gets underway in January.

Last season UniKL had the towering presence of Sander de Wjin and Jeroen Hertzberger.

It is said that coach Arul Selvaraj is negotiating the deals .

Arul decided to stay put at UniKL despite receiving an offer from Terengganu Hockey Team , Who now have signed I. Vikneswaran as coach.

Should the Dutch players fail to get the necessary release, then the option is open for UniKL to pursue another two players from Australia.

It is also said that UniKL has parted ways with five players for the new season, one being S. Selvarajoo and the other current international Joel Samuel van Huizen.
