UniKL sign up top foreigners

UniKL aim to give the big guns of the Malaysian Hockey League a run for their money for the 2018 season that will commence in January.

UniKL have signed on six foreign players that are expected to boost its bid to challenge for honours.

Traditionally Terengganu Hockey Team and KL Hockey Club dominate the honours at the end of the season.

But UniKL are hoping that their new signings will held change their fortunes and they aim to wrest of of the three titles at state – the knockout, League or overall championship.

Towards helping them achieve this, UniKL have roped in two key Australians – Glenn Turner and Kieran Gowrers. Another Australian to sign up for them is Tim Deavin who uses to play for KLHC.

Turner was a member of the Aussie squad that won gold medals at the 2010 and 2014 World Cups.

In goal UniKL will have the services of Ireland’s David Harte.

Harte Who is 29 years old helped Ireland to win bronze at the European Championships in London in 2015.

And the list does not stop there as UniKL managed to rope in two former Dutch internationals Sander van Wink as well as Jeroen Hertzberger.

Hertzberger who is 31 was a member of the Dutch team that won silver at the 2014 World Cup.

“ We are fortunate to get the services of these players and much of the credit goes to the management as they planned the signings early,” said UniKL coach Arul Selvaraj.

“ We are looking forward to a good season and preparations have started with the local players as we expect the foreign signings will only come after Christmas.”

On the local front UniKL will have the services of Mohd Mathan Jalil and Najmi Farizal, both members of the national team.

And they have also signed on another national player Joel Samuel van Huizen who moved from KL Hockey Club.

A total of six teams have confirmed entry for the 2018 when it closed today.

The six are Terengganu Hockey Team, Tenaga Nasional Berhad, Maybank, KL Hockey Club, Thunderbolts and UniKL.
