Asian Indoor Hockey – Tough Pools for Malaysia

Malaysia have been placed with 2018 Indoor World Cup bronze medalist Iran in the Asian Indoor Hockey Tournament 2019.

The event will be held from 15th – 21st July, at Chonburi, Thailand.

Hosted by the Thailand Hockey Association, it will see 11 nations battling it out for honours in the men’s competition whereas the women’s competition has attracted 10 entries.

Group A consists of Iran. Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines and Bangladesh.

While Group B has Kazakhstan. Uzbekistan, Chinese Taipei, Singapore, Myanmar and Nepal.

The Iran men’s team are on an unstoppable winning streak, having won all previous editions of the Indoor Asia Cup.

In last year’s Indoor World Cup , they emerged as the first non European team to have won a medal in the tournaments history.

As for the women’s competition. Malaysia are in Group B with the likes of Thailand. Chinese Taipei, Iran and Nepal.

Ironically Thailand are the gold medalist of the regional SEA Games.

Defending champions Kazakhstan , who won the last five editions of the Indoor Asia Cup from 2010 – 2017, are in Group A with Uzbekistan, Cambodia. Singapore and Philippines.

The indoor tournament will see the preparation of the national team ahead of the 2019 Manila SEA Games where Indoor Hockey will be contested.

In the 2017 KL SEA Games Malaysia won gold in the men’s competition but lost the women’s competition with Thailand taking the gold and Indonesia the silver.

However Indonesia which won silver medals in KL 2017 are not participating in the Asian Indoor Tournament as there are two Hockey federations running the sport in the country.
