DS Reezal clears the confusion

The chest thumping, self praising and unfounded jubilation by some sports leaders after the 2021 Budget announcement yesterday can now stop.

It all started when the Finance Minister announced an allocation of RM55 million for elite sports for the purpose of development .

Four sports were mentioned in his speech and suddenly the furore started as to how much each sports will be allocated.

One TV station even went to the extent of doing their own maths, stating the five activities can look towards receiving RM8 million each.

But little did anyone realise the Youth and Sports Minister Dato Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican had been working quietly and diligently with the Finance Minister to have a targetted development program for certain sports.

While football has its own allocation for the NFDP, DS Reezal wanted a similar kind of allocation for sports that were deemed world class and achieved high KPI at multi sports events

Therefore this is purely for development purposes and not for playing tours that officials enjoy the most.

And this morning DS Reezal gave clarity on the allocation ( read the press release below).

Nothing is cast in stone when it comes to allocations and some must learn to differentiate a speech and a policy.

In the release, it clearly defines that the money is for E-Sports development and other sports namely Athletics Badminton, Squash, Golf, Aquatics ( swimming and diving) Gymnastics ( Artistic and Rhythmic ) and Tenpin Bowling will also get assistance for development programs in 2021.

This RM55 million will be distributed after a study has been done on the sports mentioned above as well as the three other sports that already have a development program in place or in the pipeline like Hockey, Cycling and Rugby.

There is still many things to sort out – like who holds the purse strings.

The Football program is currently helmed by NSC operational wise with FAM have little say and no money allocated to them at all directly.

Rugby, Cycling and Hockey however are self managed with funding given to the respective NSA’s to manage.

So best to let DS Reezal to determine the best way forward.

His press release today showed that he in on the top of things and he knows the way forward.

And those chest thumping officials, perhaps it’s best to use Japanese slippers in future as it Dave’s your palms from getting hurt.
